Basketball Essentials - Shooting

The next concept I will be focusing on, is shooting the basketball. Having success in shooting a basketball begins with the perfect mechanics. To become a consistent shooter, you must be consistent in your shooting form and mechanics. Rather than a drill, I will be describing steps to achieve a form that you can change to adapt to your body. After all, not all shooting forms look the same. Steps: Prepared Stance: Begin in a prepared stance with your knees bent, your feet shoulder-width apart, and your weight on the balls of your feet. Your arms should be in an L shape with the elbows tucked in at the side Hand Placement: To ensure ball control, keep the ball on your finger pads and fingertips. You should be able to fit two fingers between the basketball and your palm. Also, try to spread your fingers as wide as possible to cover more area on the ball. Eyes On The Basket: You can increase your shooting accuracy by having a laser focus. When the ball is in flight, keep your eyes l...

Basketball Essentials - Passing

For this post, I am going to highlight passing, and its role in the game of basketball. Passing requires great accuracy, whether you're making a penetrating pass into the heart of the defense or completing a pass to an open teammate's hands for a shot. Players that can throw on-target passes lower the risk of turnovers and improve shooting percentages. There are many different ways to improve your ability to pass, and it can usually depend on the type of player you are. However, this is one drill that benefits anyone and everyone. Setup: Use two players and one basketball Both players stand on opposite sides of the lane, facing each other. You should start with the ball Execution: Your partner should give you a random passing target with the dominant hand and should indicate which type of pass you will make (bounce pass, lob pass, etc.). You should make an on-target pass and hit your partner's target hand. Perform and repeat this drill for one minute. Bo...

Basketball Essentials - Dribbling

Image
Basketball was invented by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. It has been around for almost 130 years and it is still ever-changing. The most basic aspect of the game, is still arguably dribbling. In the book "Basketball Basics" by Ryan Goodson,  it says "Dribbling is a no-excuses skill. You don't need a gym, a teammate, or a hoop to improve your ball-handling". There are many benefits for having good dribbling skills. Useful dribbling beats the defense, alleviates pressure, and creates opportunities. There are many ways to practice and build your dribbling skills, but the "Rattlesnake Drill" is arguably the best drill to produce results rapidly. Rattlesnake Drill Setup: Use one player (yourself), one basketball, and one tennis ball Execution: Pound the basketball with one hand while repeatedly placing a tennis ball on the ground and picking it up with the nondribbling hand. When placing and picking up the tennis ball, you...
